Threatened with a penalty or legal action over a job

Already paid, or shared an OTP? Call 1930, the national cybercrime helpline, straight away, tell your bank, and report it at cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner it is reported, the better the chance the money can be frozen.
A message like this
You have left the assignment incomplete. As per company policy a penalty of Rs 4,500 must be paid within 24 hours or legal action will be taken and you will be blacklisted.
This looks like a scam
- It threatens a penalty, a blacklist or legal action unless you pay. Job portals and companies do not fine candidates.
- It pushes you to act quickly. Pressure is how a scammer stops you from checking.
This is what the scam check in the JobCatch app says about the message above, word for word. The message is an example written the way these scams are written; the names and numbers in it are made up.
How this scam works
Threats usually come after you have already been drawn in, often in a task scam: you are told you broke a rule, left a task unfinished or signed an agreement, and must pay a penalty to avoid being blacklisted, reported to the police or taken to court. Some messages carry fake legal notices with seals and signatures.
The aim is fear. Frightened people pay quickly and do not ask anyone for advice.
What a real employer does
Employers and job portals do not fine candidates. A genuine legal notice comes on paper or by registered email from an identifiable lawyer or court, not as a WhatsApp image demanding payment by UPI. No one can have you "blacklisted from all jobs".
What to do
- Do not pay anything, and do not share an OTP or PIN.
- Look for the same job on the company's official website.
- If you have already paid, call 1930 (the national cybercrime helpline) straight away and tell your bank.
Questions
Can a company take legal action if I leave a job offer?
Declining an offer or leaving a task unfinished is not a crime, and no company can fine you for it through WhatsApp. If you signed a real employment contract, any dispute goes through proper legal channels, never a demand for payment by UPI.
They have my Aadhaar copy and are threatening me. What now?
Do not pay. Report it on 1930 and at cybercrime.gov.in with the screenshots and numbers, and keep a record of every message. Paying usually leads to more demands.
