Staff Nurse resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Hospitals read a nurse's resume for eligibility first and experience second: your qualification (GNM or B.Sc Nursing), your registration with the State Nursing Council, and then the departments you have worked in, the bed strength and the patient load. Put the registration number where it cannot be missed.
What recruiters look for
- GNM, B.Sc or M.Sc Nursing, and State Nursing Council registration
- Departments: ICU, emergency, ward, OT, paediatrics
- Hospital size: beds, patients per shift
- BLS or ACLS certification and any specialised training

Staff nurse with five years in the medical ICU of a 600-bed multispeciality hospital. BLS and ACLS certified; trains new nurses on ventilator care and infection control.
Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| Patient care | Patient handling |
| First aid | BLS, CPR |
| Clinical documentation | Medical records |
| Phlebotomy | Blood collection |
| English | — |
| Hindi | — |
Also worth listing if you have them: IV cannulation, Medication administration, ICU care, Infection control.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Care for three to four ventilated patients per shift in a 24-bed medical ICU of a 600-bed hospital.
- Trained 20 new nurses on ventilator care, documentation and infection-control bundles.
- Helped bring central-line infections in the ICU to zero for nine months by following the insertion and care bundle.
- Respond to code blue calls as part of the hospital's resuscitation team.
- Keep clinical documentation and medication records audit-ready; no findings in the last NABH assessment.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Internship rotation of six months across medicine, surgery, paediatrics and emergency at a 500-bed hospital.
- Assisted in 40 deliveries in the labour room during the obstetrics posting.
- Took part in a village health camp that screened 300 people for diabetes and blood pressure.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving out the registration number. Hospitals check it, and a resume without it may not be shortlisted.
- Not naming departments. ICU, emergency and OT experience are hired separately.
- No hospital size or patient load. They tell the reader the pace you are used to.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain Staff Nurse posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has

- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.

Questions
Should a nurse include the registration number on a resume?
Yes. Give the State Nursing Council and your registration number near the top. Hospitals verify it before an offer.
Do Indian nurses need a separate resume for jobs abroad?
Yes. Gulf, UK and other employers expect their own format and want licensing exams (such as a Gulf country's licensing test, or NCLEX or the UK's NMC process) mentioned. See the Gulf CV guide.
