Modern resume templates
Modern templates add colour, structure or a striking header while keeping the reading order a parser expects. They suit tech, product, startups, marketing and sales — places where a little personality helps and nobody expects a formal letter. Two of them use a side column; those are labelled, because an ATS can run two columns together.

How to choose
- Modern or Stripe for tech and product roles: accent headings, nothing more.
- Impact for sales, marketing and operations, where numbers should jump out.
- Dateline or Journey when the shape of your career is the story: steady growth or a clear climb.
- Skills First for a career change, when your skills matter more than your job titles.
Avoid the two-column designs (Focus and Slate) for any job you apply to through a portal. Use them when you hand the resume to a person, such as at a referral or a walk-in.
Questions
Are colourful resumes ATS-friendly?
Colour itself is fine: an ATS reads text, not colour. What breaks parsing is layout — side columns, tables and text boxes. Keep headings dark enough to survive a black-and-white photocopy.
Which modern template is best for software engineers?
Modern or Stripe if you want colour, or one of the Tech templates if you want skills and projects first. All of them are single-column.
