Mechanical Engineer cover letter example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
This letter was drafted by JobCatch's cover-letter writer from the sample Mechanical Engineer resume, for a plain posting for the role. It uses only what is already on the resume — the current job, its strongest bullets and the skills the posting asks for that the resume has. It invents nothing, which is why it is short.
The letter, as text
I am writing to apply for the Mechanical Engineer position. I currently work as Production Engineer at Sahyadri Auto Components.
Some of what I have done:
- Run a machining line of 22 CNC machines producing 4,000 brake components a day.
- Raised line output by 18% by rebalancing operations and cutting changeover time with SMED.
- Cut the rejection rate from 2.1% to 0.6% with poka-yoke fixtures and a first-piece approval check.
The role asks for MATLAB, Microsoft Excel, SAP, Process improvement, Team leadership and Documentation, which I have worked with.
I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could contribute. My resume is attached. Thank you for your time.
What to add for a Mechanical Engineer role
Say whether you work in design, production or maintenance, and give one plant number you improved. Plant managers hire for results they can measure.
Before you send it
- Name the company and, if you can find it, the hiring manager.
- Add one sentence on why this company: something specific you read about it.
- Keep it under one page, and send it as a PDF with the same name and contact line as your resume.
What to leave out
- Adjectives about yourself — "passionate", "results-driven", "hardworking". Facts do that job better.
- Your whole resume again. Pick the two or three things that matter most for this job.
- Salary, notice period and personal details, unless the posting asks for them in the letter.
