Mechanical Engineer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Mechanical engineers in India work in design, production, maintenance and quality, and each of those reads a resume for different things. Say which you do in your first line, then name the software and the processes, and give numbers a plant manager cares about: output, downtime, rejection rate, cost.
What recruiters look for
- Your area: design, production, maintenance, quality or projects
- Software: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, ANSYS
- Shop-floor numbers: output, downtime, rejection, cost
- Standards and methods: GD&T, lean, 5S, Six Sigma, ISO

Summary examples
Fresher
Mechanical engineering graduate (7.8 CGPA) with SolidWorks and AutoCAD, a six-month internship in a forging plant's production line, and a final-year project on a solar dryer.
Experienced
Production engineer with five years in automotive components. Run a machining line of 22 CNC machines, raised output by 18% and cut the rejection rate from 2.1% to 0.6%.
Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| MATLAB | — |
| Microsoft Excel | Excel, MS Excel, Advanced Excel |
| SAP | SAP ERP, SAP MM, SAP FICO |
| Process improvement | Process optimisation, Process optimization |
| Team leadership | Team management, People management |
| Documentation | Technical writing, Record keeping |
Also worth listing if you have them: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, GD&T, Lean manufacturing and 5S, Preventive maintenance.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Run a machining line of 22 CNC machines producing 4,000 brake components a day.
- Raised line output by 18% by rebalancing operations and cutting changeover time with SMED.
- Cut the rejection rate from 2.1% to 0.6% with poka-yoke fixtures and a first-piece approval check.
- Planned preventive maintenance with the maintenance team; unplanned downtime fell by 35%.
- Led the line's 5S and Kaizen programme; 40 improvement ideas implemented in a year.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Six-month internship on a forging plant's production line, studying cycle time and scrap.
- Final-year project: designed and built a solar dryer in SolidWorks, tested on 20 kg of chillies.
- Certified in AutoCAD and SolidWorks (associate level).
Mistakes to avoid
- Not saying whether you are a design, production or maintenance engineer. They are different jobs.
- Listing software without what you made with it. Name a part, a drawing or a project.
- No plant numbers. Output, downtime, rejection and cost are what managers compare.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

Interview questions to prepare
The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain Mechanical Engineer posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes: what you do now (Production Engineer at Sahyadri Auto Components), one result you are proud of, and why this role is next.
- Why do you want this job? Read their website and one recent piece of news before the call. Name something specific.
- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.
About the skills the job asks for
- Tell me about a time you used MATLAB. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Microsoft Excel. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Process improvement. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.

Questions to ask them
- What would a good first three months in this role look like?
- Who would I work with most closely?
- What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear back?

Questions
Which software should a mechanical engineer list?
AutoCAD is expected almost everywhere; SolidWorks, CATIA or Creo for design roles; ANSYS for analysis. List the ones you can use in a test, and name what you designed.
How can a mechanical fresher make a resume stand out?
A real internship or project with numbers — cycle time reduced, scrap measured, a prototype built — and certifications in the software the job asks for. Graduate engineer trainee programmes look for exactly that.
