System Administrator cover letter example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
This letter was drafted by JobCatch's cover-letter writer from the sample System Administrator resume, for a plain posting for the role. It uses only what is already on the resume — the current job, its strongest bullets and the skills the posting asks for that the resume has. It invents nothing, which is why it is short.
The letter, as text
I am writing to apply for the System Administrator position. I currently work as System Administrator at Kirtiman Engineering.
Some of what I have done:
- Manage 250 Linux and Windows servers and Active Directory for 1,800 users across six plants.
- Automated patching with Ansible; the monthly cycle fell from three days to four hours.
- Rebuilt backups with off-site copies and tested restores; recovered a failed file server in 40 minutes.
The role asks for Linux, Shell scripting, Python, AWS, Microsoft Azure and Docker, which I have worked with.
I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could contribute. My resume is attached. Thank you for your time.
What to add for a System Administrator role
Mention the systems you manage and one task you automated. It shows you are moving towards the DevOps work most sysadmin roles now include.
Before you send it
- Name the company and, if you can find it, the hiring manager.
- Add one sentence on why this company: something specific you read about it.
- Keep it under one page, and send it as a PDF with the same name and contact line as your resume.
What to leave out
- Adjectives about yourself — "passionate", "results-driven", "hardworking". Facts do that job better.
- Your whole resume again. Pick the two or three things that matter most for this job.
- Salary, notice period and personal details, unless the posting asks for them in the letter.
