SQL Developer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
SQL developers are hired for database depth: queries that are correct and fast, stored procedures that business logic depends on, and schemas that hold up. A resume should name the database platforms, show performance work with numbers, and mention data volumes.
What recruiters look for
- The platforms: SQL Server, Oracle (PL/SQL), PostgreSQL, MySQL
- Query tuning with before-and-after timings
- Stored procedures, functions, triggers and schema design
- Data volumes and the systems that depend on your work

Summary examples
Fresher
SQL developer with a BCA, an internship writing stored procedures for an inventory system, and Oracle Database SQL certification.
Experienced
SQL developer with five years on SQL Server and Oracle for an insurance company. Tuned the claims database so the slowest report went from 40 minutes to 90 seconds.
Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| SQL | Structured Query Language |
| Microsoft SQL Server | SQL Server, MSSQL, T-SQL |
| Oracle Database | Oracle, PL/SQL |
| PostgreSQL | Postgres, PostgresSQL |
| MySQL | My SQL |
| Database design | Schema design, Data modelling, Data modeling |
| ETL | Data pipelines, ELT |
| Data analysis | Data analytics |
| Shell scripting | Bash, Shell, Bash scripting |
| Git | Version control, GitHub, Bitbucket |
Also worth listing if you have them: Query optimisation, SSIS.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Tuned the claims database on SQL Server; the slowest month-end report fell from 40 minutes to 90 seconds.
- Wrote and maintain 120 stored procedures and functions that the policy system depends on.
- Designed the schema for a new rewards programme holding 3 crore transactions a year.
- Built SSIS packages that load data from 14 branch systems each night.
- Wrote PL/SQL for a data migration of 9 crore rows with full reconciliation and no data loss.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Internship: wrote stored procedures and triggers for a distributor's inventory system.
- Designed a normalised schema for a hospital appointment app and wrote its reporting queries.
- Solved all SQL problems at medium difficulty on two practice platforms.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing "SQL" alone. Name the platforms; SQL Server and Oracle work differ in real ways.
- No performance numbers. Tuning is the core skill; before-and-after times prove it.
- Leaving out the business side. Say which systems or reports depend on your database work.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

Interview questions to prepare
The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain SQL Developer posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes: what you do now (Senior SQL Developer at Suraksha Insure Tech), one result you are proud of, and why this role is next.
- Why do you want this job? Read their website and one recent piece of news before the call. Name something specific.
- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.
About the skills the job asks for
- Tell me about a time you used SQL. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used MySQL. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used PostgreSQL. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.

Questions
Is SQL developer a good career in India?
Yes. Banks, insurers, IT services firms and product companies all need it, and it leads naturally into data engineering, BI or database administration.
Should I list PL/SQL and T-SQL separately?
Yes, if you know both. They are what Oracle and SQL Server teams search for, and the procedural code is different enough that employers care.
