Technical Writer cover letter example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
This letter was drafted by JobCatch's cover-letter writer from the sample Technical Writer resume, for a plain posting for the role. It uses only what is already on the resume — the current job, its strongest bullets and the skills the posting asks for that the resume has. It invents nothing, which is why it is short.
The letter, as text
I am writing to apply for the Technical Writer position. I currently work as Senior Technical Writer at Paylane Technologies.
Some of what I have done:
- Rebuilt the payments API reference from OpenAPI specs with docs-as-code; integration tickets fell 35%.
- Wrote the getting-started guide that cut median time to first API call from two days to three hours.
- Own release notes for a monthly release train across four products.
The role asks for Documentation, Content writing, Git, Confluence, JIRA and REST APIs, which I have worked with.
I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could contribute. My resume is attached. Thank you for your time.
What to add for a Technical Writer role
Keep the letter short, clean and error-free — it is your first writing sample — and link one piece of documentation you are proud of.
Before you send it
- Name the company and, if you can find it, the hiring manager.
- Add one sentence on why this company: something specific you read about it.
- Keep it under one page, and send it as a PDF with the same name and contact line as your resume.
What to leave out
- Adjectives about yourself — "passionate", "results-driven", "hardworking". Facts do that job better.
- Your whole resume again. Pick the two or three things that matter most for this job.
- Salary, notice period and personal details, unless the posting asks for them in the letter.
