Campus placement resume: the one-page format recruiters compare
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
At campus placements, recruiters read hundreds of resumes from the same college in a day, often side by side. Many placement cells give every student the same template for exactly that reason. What decides the shortlist is what you put into the format: grades, projects, internships and what you did beyond class.
Use the placement cell's format if there is one
If your college's training and placement cell prescribes a format, use it exactly; recruiters expect it and some portals reject anything else. Your job is to fill it well. If there is no format, a one-page, single-column resume in the order below works.
The order that works
- Academic details in a table: degree, institute, year, CGPA or percentage, then Class 12 and Class 10.
- Internships: organisation, dates and what you did, with a result.
- Projects: two or three, each with what it does, what you built, the tools, and a link.
- Technical skills: only what you can be questioned on.
- Positions of responsibility: club heads, fest coordinators, class representatives, with what you achieved.
- Achievements: competitive programming ratings, hackathons, olympiads, scholarships, ranks.
One page, always
A fresher's placement resume fits on one page. Cut school-level achievements before cutting a good project, and cut a hobby before cutting an internship. Recruiters at placements spend seconds on each resume; the page must be scannable.
What to leave out
- An "Objective" line about seeking a challenging role. Every student has it; it says nothing.
- A photo, unless the format asks for one.
- Personal details beyond contact information.
- Skills you have only watched a video about.
Questions
Should I mention my JEE rank on my placement resume?
If it is strong and you are in an engineering programme, it can help with some recruiters. If it is average, leave it out; your college CGPA matters more.
What if my CGPA is low?
Show it anyway if the format or the company asks; hiding it looks worse. Let strong projects, internships and coding results carry the page, and apply to companies whose cut-off you meet.
