Resume and bio-data format for government jobs in India

By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·

Most government recruitment in India — UPSC, SSC, the Railway Recruitment Boards, IBPS and state commissions — is applied for through an official online form, not a resume. But a resume or bio-data is still asked for in many cases, and it has to follow a stricter shape than a private-sector one.

When you need one

Always follow the format in the official notification if one is given. Many notifications include a prescribed proforma; use it exactly.

What to include

  1. Name exactly as on your Class 10 certificate.
  2. Father's (or mother's / spouse's) name, date of birth as on the Class 10 certificate, gender, nationality.
  3. Category (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS) and PwBD status, only if you are claiming a reservation, with the certificate ready.
  4. Address for correspondence and permanent address, phone and email.
  5. Qualifications in a table: examination, board or university, year, percentage or CGPA, and division.
  6. Experience with exact dates (DD/MM/YYYY), designation, organisation and, for government service, the pay level.
  7. Declaration, place, date and signature, and a recent passport-size photo.

Make it match your documents

Government recruitment checks every detail against your certificates at document verification. A name spelled differently, a date of birth that does not match Class 10, or a percentage rounded up can lead to rejection after you have cleared every other stage. Copy each detail from the certificate, not from memory.

Experience certificates and gaps

For experience to count, you usually need a certificate from the employer stating the post, dates and nature of work. List experience exactly as those certificates state it. Explain a gap honestly if asked; do not stretch dates to close it.

Questions

Is a bio-data the same as a resume for government jobs?

In practice, government employers usually mean bio-data: a resume with personal particulars, a qualifications table and a signed declaration. Read the bio-data format guide for the differences.

Should I write my caste on a government job resume?

Only your reservation category (SC, ST, OBC-NCL or EWS), and only if you are claiming the reservation for that post. Never your caste name or religion unless the proforma asks.

How do I apply for RRB or SSC jobs?

Through the official website named in the notification, using its online form. No resume is needed for those exams; be careful of sites and agents that ask for a fee to "apply for you".
