Civil Engineer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Civil engineering employers — contractors, builders, consultants and government projects — want to know what you have built, how big it was, and what part you played. Name the projects with their type and value, your role on site or in design, and the software and estimating work you can do.
What recruiters look for
- Projects: type, size, value and your role
- Site execution, quantity surveying, billing or design
- Software: AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, MS Project, Primavera
- Safety and quality on site

Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| Project management | Project planning |
| Microsoft Excel | Excel, MS Excel, Advanced Excel |
| Vendor management | — |
| Documentation | Technical writing, Record keeping |
| Team leadership | Team management, People management |
Also worth listing if you have them: AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, Quantity estimation and BOQ, Bar bending schedule, Site execution.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Executed the structure of a ₹85 crore G+14 residential tower, completed two weeks ahead of schedule.
- Prepared quantity estimates, bar bending schedules and contractor bills worth ₹30 crore a year.
- Cut steel wastage from 4% to 1.8% with optimised bar bending schedules.
- Managed six subcontractors and 150 workers on site, with daily progress reports.
- Ran weekly safety walks; the site completed 500,000 hours without a lost-time accident.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Six-month site internship on a G+12 residential building: shuttering, reinforcement checks and concreting.
- Final-year project: analysed and designed a G+4 building in STAAD.Pro.
- Completed a course in quantity estimation and costing.
Mistakes to avoid
- Project names without size or value. "Worked on residential project" says nothing; "₹85 crore G+14 tower" says a lot.
- Not stating your role. Site execution, billing and design are different responsibilities.
- Leaving out safety. Contractors care about it, and a strong record is worth a line.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.
