Embedded Software Engineer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Embedded hiring in India spans automotive, semiconductors, consumer electronics, medical devices and industrial IoT. Hiring managers want C and C++ on real hardware: the microcontrollers you used, the protocols, the RTOS, and how you debugged at the board level.
What recruiters look for
- C and C++ on microcontrollers, with the families named (ARM Cortex-M, STM32, ESP32)
- RTOS and communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN)
- Hardware debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analysers and JTAG
- Domain standards: AUTOSAR, MISRA C, ISO 26262 where relevant

Summary examples
Fresher
Electronics graduate who writes embedded C for ARM Cortex-M and ESP32, with a final-year project on a battery-monitoring system using CAN and FreeRTOS.
Experienced
Embedded software engineer with five years writing firmware for automotive body controllers. Owns the CAN stack for two ECUs and brought the codebase to MISRA C compliance.
Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| C | C language |
| C++ | CPP, C plus plus |
| Python | Python 3 |
| Linux | Unix, Ubuntu, RHEL |
| Shell scripting | Bash, Shell, Bash scripting |
| Git | Version control, GitHub, Bitbucket |
| Unit testing | Unit tests |
Also worth listing if you have them: Embedded C, RTOS (FreeRTOS), ARM Cortex-M, I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, MISRA C, Oscilloscope and logic analyser.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Wrote and maintain firmware for two automotive body control ECUs on ARM Cortex-M4 with FreeRTOS.
- Brought 60,000 lines of embedded C to MISRA C:2012 compliance ahead of a customer audit.
- Cut the boot time of a door-control module from 180 ms to 65 ms by reordering peripheral initialisation.
- Found a CAN bus timing fault with a logic analyser that had caused intermittent field failures.
- Built a Python hardware-in-the-loop test rig that runs 400 tests on every firmware build.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Final-year project: battery-monitoring system on STM32 with FreeRTOS, reporting over CAN.
- Built an ESP32 weather station that sends readings over MQTT, running six months on one battery.
- Six-month internship at an EMS company testing firmware for a smart energy meter.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not naming the hardware. "Microcontrollers" is vague; "STM32F4, ESP32, nRF52" tells the reader exactly what you know.
- Only listing software tools. Show that you can use an oscilloscope, a logic analyser and a debugger.
- Leaving out standards. In automotive and medical work, MISRA, AUTOSAR or ISO 26262 can decide the shortlist.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

Interview questions to prepare
The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain Embedded Software Engineer posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes: what you do now (Embedded Software Engineer at Autotronix Systems), one result you are proud of, and why this role is next.
- Why do you want this job? Read their website and one recent piece of news before the call. Name something specific.
- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.
About the skills the job asks for
- Tell me about a time you used Python. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used C++. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Shell scripting. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Linux. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Git. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
About what the resume claims
- You wrote: "Wrote and maintain firmware for two automotive body control ECUs on ARM Cortex-M4 with FreeRTOS." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
- You wrote: "Brought 60,000 lines of embedded C to MISRA C:2012 compliance ahead of a customer audit." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
- You wrote: "Cut the boot time of a door-control module from 180 ms to 65 ms by reordering peripheral initialisation." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
Questions to ask them
- What would a good first three months in this role look like?
- Who would I work with most closely?
- What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear back?
Templates that suit this role

Questions
Can an electronics graduate get an embedded software job?
Yes — ECE and EEE graduates are the usual hires. Show C programming on real hardware, a project with a protocol like I2C or CAN, and some debugging stories.
Which certification helps for embedded jobs?
Few certifications carry much weight; projects do. Short courses in AUTOSAR or functional safety help for automotive roles, especially if the posting names them.
