Node.js Developer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Node.js roles sit between backend and full stack, and the posting usually tells you which: APIs and queues, or APIs plus a React frontend. Lead with the server side — Node.js, a framework like Express or NestJS, and the databases — and show that you understand async code, performance and production.
What recruiters look for
- Node.js with Express or NestJS, and TypeScript
- API design, authentication and validation
- Databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL) and caching with Redis
- Production concerns: logging, monitoring, scaling, event-loop blocking

Summary examples
Fresher
Node.js developer who has built REST and GraphQL APIs with Express, MongoDB and JWT authentication, deployed on AWS. Strong in JavaScript and async programming.
Experienced
Node.js developer with four years building APIs for an edtech platform serving 8 lakh students. Moved the API to TypeScript and NestJS and cut p99 latency by 60%.
Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| Node.js | NodeJS, Node, Node JS |
| Express.js | Express, ExpressJS |
| TypeScript | TS |
| JavaScript | JS, ES6, ECMAScript |
| REST APIs | REST, RESTful APIs, REST API |
| GraphQL | — |
| MongoDB | Mongo |
| PostgreSQL | Postgres, PostgresSQL |
| Redis | — |
| JWT authentication | JWT, JSON Web Token |
| Docker | Containerisation, Containerization |
| AWS | Amazon Web Services |
| Message queues (Kafka) | Kafka, Apache Kafka |
| Git | Version control, GitHub, Bitbucket |
Also worth listing if you have them: NestJS.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Built and run the course-progress API in Node.js and PostgreSQL for 8 lakh students, at 4,000 requests a second at peak.
- Cut p99 latency by 60% by moving PDF generation off the request path to a Redis-backed job queue.
- Migrated 90 Express routes to NestJS and TypeScript, adding request validation to every endpoint.
- Added structured logging and tracing, so a slow request can be followed through four services.
- Built a GraphQL layer for the mobile app that halved the number of API calls per screen.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Built a REST API for a blogging platform in Express and MongoDB with JWT login and role-based access.
- Wrote a real-time chat server with Socket.IO and Redis pub/sub, tested with 500 simultaneous users.
- Interned on a backend team and wrote API tests that are now part of the CI pipeline.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating Node.js as a frontend skill. Put it with your backend experience and show server work.
- No mention of how you handle errors, logging or load. That is what Node.js interviews dig into.
- Listing npm packages as skills. Name frameworks and databases; leave the libraries for the interview.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

Interview questions to prepare
The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain Node.js Developer posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes: what you do now (Senior Node.js Developer at Learnova Edtech), one result you are proud of, and why this role is next.
- Why do you want this job? Read their website and one recent piece of news before the call. Name something specific.
- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.
About the skills the job asks for
- Tell me about a time you used JavaScript. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used TypeScript. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Node.js. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Express.js. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used REST APIs. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used GraphQL. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
About what the resume claims
- You wrote: "Built and run the course-progress API in Node.js and PostgreSQL for 8 lakh students, at 4,000 requests a second at peak." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
- You wrote: "Cut p99 latency by 60% by moving PDF generation off the request path to a Redis-backed job queue." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
- You wrote: "Migrated 90 Express routes to NestJS and TypeScript, adding request validation to every endpoint." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.
Questions to ask them
- What would a good first three months in this role look like?
- Who would I work with most closely?
- What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear back?
Templates that suit this role
All of these are single-column and read cleanly by an applicant tracking system. Classic is free, with no watermark.
Questions
Should I write Node, NodeJS or Node.js?
"Node.js" is the official name and what most postings use. An ATS may not match the others, so use "Node.js" unless a specific posting spells it differently.
Is NestJS worth learning for Node.js jobs?
It appears in more Indian postings every year, especially at product companies with TypeScript codebases. If you have used it, list it; if not, Express with TypeScript is still the most asked-for combination.
