Java Developer resume example
By Bhagirath Sheela, founder of JobCatch ·
Java is the most-hired backend language in India, which means a Java resume competes with a great many others. What separates one is specifics: the Java version, Spring Boot and its modules, the databases and messaging you used, and what your services did in production.
What recruiters look for
- Core Java and the version (Java 11, 17 or 21), plus Spring Boot
- Microservices, REST APIs, Hibernate/JPA and SQL
- Messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and cloud deployment
- Domain experience — banking, telecom, retail — which services firms staff by

Skills, spelled the way postings spell them
An applicant tracking system matches the words in the job posting, and it does not reliably treat two spellings as one skill. The left column is the form most postings use; the right, other spellings people type. Use the posting's own spelling for each application, and list only what you can discuss in an interview.
| Skill | Also written as |
|---|---|
| Java | Core Java, Java SE |
| Spring Boot | SpringBoot, Spring |
| Microservices | Microservice architecture |

Also worth listing if you have them: Hibernate / JPA, Maven.
Bullet examples
Each bullet says what you did and what changed because of it. Change the numbers to your own; a recruiter will ask about every one.
- Designed the payment-status service in Spring Boot and Kafka, processing 25 lakh events a day.
- Upgraded seven services from Java 8 to Java 17, cutting memory use by 20% and unblocking a security audit.
- Replaced N+1 Hibernate queries in the statements API, cutting response time from 3.2 s to 400 ms.
- Wrote JUnit and integration tests that took coverage from 35% to 80% before a core banking release.
- Worked with the client's architects to define API contracts for 14 microservices.
For freshers: projects and internships
- Six-month internship: built REST APIs in Spring Boot and MySQL for an HR leave-management portal.
- Final-year project: a hostel management system in Java, Spring Boot and Thymeleaf with role-based login.
- Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 17 Programmer.
Mistakes to avoid
- "Java, J2EE, Struts, EJB" at the top. Those read as 2010; lead with modern Java and Spring Boot unless the posting asks for legacy.
- Copying the project description from your company's website. Say what you did, not what the client's system does.
- Leaving out the domain. "Banking" or "telecom" is often exactly what a services company is staffing for.
What an ATS reads from this sample
An applicant tracking system turns the PDF into plain text before anyone reads it. This is that text for the sample above, extracted by the same code as "What the ATS reads" in the app. Everything is in reading order, under the right heading, with the name and email intact — which is what a single-column template is for.

Interview questions to prepare
The app's interview prep for this sample and a plain Java Developer posting. It works from the resume and the posting only, and tells you how to prepare, never what to say.
Questions every interview has
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes: what you do now (Senior Java Developer at Finstack Banking Solutions), one result you are proud of, and why this role is next.
- Why do you want this job? Read their website and one recent piece of news before the call. Name something specific.
- Why are you leaving your current job? Say what you are moving towards. Do not criticise your employer.
- What is your notice period, and what salary are you expecting? Decide your number before the interview, so you are not deciding it on the call.
About the skills the job asks for
- Tell me about a time you used Java. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used Spring Boot. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
- Tell me about a time you used REST APIs. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.

- Tell me about a time you used MySQL. Pick one real example: what the problem was, what you did, and what changed.
About what the resume claims
- You wrote: "Designed the payment-status service in Spring Boot and Kafka, processing 25 lakh events a day." Expect three follow-ups: how exactly, what was your own part, and how you know it worked.

Questions to ask them
- What would a good first three months in this role look like?
- Who would I work with most closely?
- What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear back?

Questions
Which Java certification helps on a resume?
Oracle's Java SE certifications are the ones recruiters recognise. They matter most for freshers and for services companies; for experienced developers, production work counts for more.
Should I write Core Java separately?
Write "Java" with the version, and show the core skills — collections, concurrency, streams — in what you built. Many postings say "Core Java", so it does no harm to use that phrase once.
